Art by Susan Newman

Artist Susan Newman's masterpieces featured on Pug Wine labels

Pug Wine has been honored to feature Susan Newman's art on its labels for 2006 Pug Blanc and soon to be released 2007 Pug Blanc.

Artist Susan Newman and her sculptor husband, Mark Newman, are currently owned by two pugs, Morty and Inez. Susan studied illustration and the San Francisco Academy of Art but credits pugs with inspiring her to begin painting as a full time career: "Mark and I were traveling in Italy and I spotted and fell in love with two pugs in Florence. I took it as a sign I was meant to to have pugs as my muses." Susan explains she was so eager to find a pug that Mark sculpted one for her, "to tide me over" until she could locate the right puppy from a reputable breeder. After returning home to the San Francisco Bay Area, Susan and Mark met pug breeder Lisa Sheeran of Frisco Pugs. First, Morty, then, Inez, joined the Newman family. The rest is pug art history.

Above, Susan captured Pug Winemaker Peggy Bennington's black girl Dremay. It is exceptionally difficult to photograph a black pug, let alone paint a black dog! Susan spun her magic on canvas and captured the very essence of Dremay's expression as a puppy so we feature her on our Pug Blanc 2006. Peggy notes, "our Blanc is meant to be enjoyed soon after bottling so this portrait of a young pug embodies the spirit of drinking a young white wine. Full of life and refreshingly full of zest!"

Pug Blanc 2007

Above t is the soon to be released Pug Blanc 2007 which features the lovely Inez, artist Susan Newman's dear girl. Accessorized in regal pearls this potrait of Inez is reflective of the rich depth of a sophisticated Rhone style white wine which goes with chicken, mushroom dishes and seafood, and is perfect for just about any occasion with lighter foods and good friends!

Susan says that Morty and Inez are a continuing source of artistic inspiration. Susan's paintings of them are to be found in nearly every room of the Newman house, and Susan has received numerous commissions from pug owners to paint their beloved companions. Susan paints clients' pugs in settings which illustrate each pug's distinctive personality and on a variety of objects, not just large and small framed canvases. Susan has fulfilled requests to paint client pugs on wooden boxes, holiday ornaments, and wine labels. She has designed a line of pug cards and has even designed a pug tattoo.

Susan aims to depict each pug as an individual. Her portraits often include textures, fabrics, jewels, crowns and sometimes, plants and other animals. Susan believes that these additional elements add richness and whimsy and help to "tell the story" of the pug she is painting. Susan says that she loves to paint pugs as they really are "with tongues out, grey muzzles, and mismatched ears....because they are all beautiful."
